Summary
The proposed project is focused on the development and enhancement of the methodology for the assessment of durability of reinforced concrete structures suitable for effective utilization. The focus is on the synergic effect of the carbonation, chlorides and mechanical damage on the occurrence of reinforcement corrosion. The effect of the mentioned phenomena will be examined for the structures in the mild climate zone that are exposed to chloride effect, e.g. from de-icing agents, and carbonation due to the presence of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Laboratory experiments will be focused on the corrosion initiation due to chlorides and carbonation. In-situ experiments will consist of the assessment of the deposition level and chlorides penetration. Moreover an extensive database of the measured chloride profiles from the exposed bridges of various ages will be organized and utilized. Such combination of the results will enable improvement of numerical models and methodology for fully probabilistic assessment of the service-life of actual or newly designed structures.
