Summary
The mathematical model of steel structures bolt connections is the contact problem. Analytical solution methods are based on essential simplification, which does not capture the real behaviour fully. Modern numerical approaches generally solve the contact problem using the approximation of the non-penetration condition by the penalty method. However, this technique results in additional difficulties with the stability and computational time demand which depends on the penalty parameter setting. The contribution of this project is the development of the innovative algorithms for solving the contact problem caused by bearing, shear and slip behaviour of the bolt connection. Algorithms are based on the non-penetration conditions in which the contact forces are represented by Lagrange multipliers. This approach ensures better numerical stability and physical accuracy. Since the real steel structures often involve millions of degrees of freedom, the developed algorithms will be parallelized. The numerical results will be validated by the full-scaled experiments.
