Bc. Tomas Urbanek was awarded the prize announced by the International Association for Trenchless Technology (ISTT) in the section of Student Award. His work was nominated by the Czech Society for Trenchless Technologies CzSTT, which also awarded it first prize.
In the bachelor thesis Bc. Tomas Urbanek analysed the possibilities of using trenchless technology for the excavation of the metro station Náměstí Bratří Synků in Prague. The station is to be constructed under the residential housing area in difficult geological and hydrogeological conditions and therefore its implementation is connected with a number of technical and technological problems. The student presented the design and numerical model analysis of four different variants of the station, including the original construction method of the metro station with the use of the trenchless technology to horizontal driving of a non-standard large-dimension rectangular structure using the rope anti-friction system Ropkins. This technology has not been used in the Czech Republic yet and its application, which allows to reduce the friction between the structure and the soil and to drive even large structures over long distance, is not quite standard even in the rest of the world.
Bc. Tomas Urbanek took the prize personally at the No-Dig Award ceremony, which took place within the Trenchless World Congress 2017, in the city of Medellin, Colombia.
