Scientific and Research Activities

The scientific and research activities of the members of the department are very diverse. They are realized in cooperation with other departments of mathematics or with workplaces with a related focus. This is done not only within VŠB-TUO, but also within the Czech Republic and across several countries. The main areas of research are as follows:

  • Numerical methods and quadratic programming
  • Process optimization and control
  • Statistical methods
  • Differential equations and dynamical systems
  • Differential geometry and variational calculus

Geometric methods in mechanics and field theory

Development of the Educational Process

The members of the department are authors of textbooks which cover all the standard courses of mathematics at VŠB-TUO (in Czech and English language). Electronic versions of these documents are available online. Several projects focused on the innovation of the math education and creation of new study materials are implemented each year. The members of the department regularly attend international conferences focused on the math teaching.

Applications of Mathematics

This area of activities is focused on solving tasks from various fields, which usually have an immediate use in practice. These are, for example:

  • Solving tasks in the field of the development of nanostructures
  • Development of algorithms for contact problems of continuum mechanics
  • Development of algorithms for problems of flow with slip condition
  • Development of algorithms for elasto-plasticity problems
  • Domain decomposition (TFETI)
  • Parallelization and vectorization of algorithms
  • Contact problems
  • Inverse problems
  • Identification of material parameters
  • Bulk materials
  • Non-holonomic mechanical systems
  • Control of mechanical systems

Variational methods in field theory

International Collaboration

The members of the department maintain a long-term international cooperation with the following institutions:

  • Silesian University of Technology, Gliwice, Poland
  • Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava, Slovakia
  • University of Presov, Slovakia
  • INRIA, Paris, France
