The Laboratory of Soil Mechanics has a long tradition at the University, its foundations were built before the foundation of the Faculty of Civil Engineering at the time of the present Department of Geotechnics and Underground Engineering at the Faculty of Mining and Geology. The laboratory equipment was subsequently expanded and innovated to cover the needs of the Department's activities within the Faculty of Civil Engineering and the requirements of practice. The laboratory equipment allows to perform a number of tests (laboratory and field) to evaluate the properties of soils and to evaluate the foundation soil. The instrumentation of this laboratory, in conjunction with the use of the Laboratory of Geotechnical Monitoring and Technical Seismicity and specialized geotechnical and hydrogeological software, enables a complex solution of practical problems of geotechnics and underground construction (stability analyzes of slopes, tunnels, embankments of building pits,…).

Soil mechanics laboratory includes the following devices:

  • FRÖWAG vibrating screening machine - device for mechanical separation of dried soil grains to create particle size distribution curves larger than 0.06 mm
  • Hydrometer - device for measuring the density change of liquid and thus for the creation of a curve of particles with particle size smaller than 0.06 mm by the principle of settlement of spherical grains in the liquid
  • pre-and back-loaded oedometer WAKEHAM FARRANCE - instrument for measuring deformation properties of soils E oed
  • FRÖWAG shear box device - an instrument for measuring the soil strength properties
  • consolidometer CONTROLS - instrument for measuring the strength and deformation properties of soils and permeability
  • triaxial instrument CONTROLS - instrument for measuring the soil strength properties
  • densitometer TEST SERVIS - device for measuring the density of soil in the field
  • Proctor's FRÖWAG - soil compaction measuring device
  • Cassagrande bowl FRÖWAG, cone control device CONTROLS - devices for determination of soil consistency limits
